Let’s See the Collective Scores of Aspire V5-473P-5602

Build and Design:

Overall Score: 7/10

acer v5 design

The laptop has very sleek design and it looks thin. On an average, we found that the weight of this notebook is around 5.29 pounds, which is lighter than most of the all-purpose laptops that are available these days. However, weight will not create much of a hassle, until and unless you are constantly travelling or using the notebook on your lap.

Draped in black plastic, the Acer Aspire V5 is fingerprint-resistant, but the design is about as thrilling as an accounting lecture. The top of the lid sports a silver Acer logo, which is also printed on the bezel directly below the display. The inside, too, is all black. The only hint of color is power button, which glows blue when the system is on.

On the plus side, the Acer V5 is quite thin and light for a budget 14-inch notebook. It measures 13.39 x 9.45 x 0.79/0.9 inches and weighs 2 kilograms, which makes it lighter than the Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 (14.9 x 9.9 x 1.2 – 1.3 inches and 6 pounds) and the Sony VAIO E Series 15 (14.7 x 10 x 1 – 1.32 inches and 5.4 pounds). The HP Pavilion g6t-2000 is nearly as light as this Acer 5.2, but is considerably thicker at 1.4 inches.

Features:

Overall Score: 7/10

Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook comes equipped with memory card reader, wireless display cable and a built-in webcam. As far as wireless connectivity is concerned, we found Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth on the laptop. It comes with a warranty period of 1 year limited warranty. However, we did miss the fingerprint reader in the laptop. Given, the number of refurbishments they are making these days, they could have made a space for this feature as well.

Like we said already, this is a multi-functional device that can work for most of your computing needs. It is cheaper than the others in its category and similar league. Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook is capable of handling almost all tasks. Overall, we can sum it to the point that this laptop is a good quality device with a decent screen size. Also, the company has made it eligible for a free upgrade of Windows 10.

Even though this laptop can handle most of the tasks, but if you are someone who enjoys gaming; Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook is not an ideal option for you. This is so because the laptops of these kinds are not designed for the purpose of high-performance gaming. The weight is not an issue as long as you place it on desk and then work. On your lap or for travelling, it might be an issue for some of the users. One area where we are not satisfied at all is the storage capacity of its hard disk. The primary method of storage in Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook is the hard disk drive or HDD. When you compare them with the modern storage sources, you will find that the HDDs access the data much slower. Despite a fast processor, this notebook will have slower processes because of slow HDD.

Keyboard and Trackpad:

Overall Score: 8/10

acer v5 kb

We worked on this computer for 2 hours flat to check in and out. The keys on Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook are quite smooth, easy to press. There is absolutely no hindrance here and you can work as smoothly as you desire. Yes, it gave an experience of fingers-flying on the keyboard and to this section, we give it a thumbs up.

There’s plenty of space between keys on the V5’s island-style keyboard, but their shallow travel led to a less-than-stellar typing experience. We scored 51 words per minute with an 8 percent error rate on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test, far below our 68 wpm average/1 percent error rate on our desktop keyboard. Acer includes a number pad as well, but as a result, the left Shift, Tab and Caps Lock keys are relatively small.

The Synaptics ClickPad measures a relatively spacious 4.1 x 3 inches, but proved erratic when performing multitouch gestures, such as pinch-to-zoom and rotate. While its integrated mouse buttons were easy to press and had a nice snap to them, the pad would sometimes confuse a left-click for a right click.

Display:

Overall Score: 7.5/10

Acer v5

With a screen size of 14”, the laptop has Active Matrix TFT Color LCD display. It makes use of IPS technology, or in-plane switching, as the company calls it. The screen therefore strikes a pretty good balance when it comes to larger display and being portable. The picture quality seems pretty decent and for entertainment purpose, it can be simply superb. With the 1920 x 1080 screen resolution, you can watch the movies of your laptop with great clarity and display.

The V5 has a 14-inch HD screen with a native resolution of 1366 x 768. Overall, we weren’t too impressed with the display. When we watched the trailer for “Skyfall” in 720p, colors such as the red in the Union Jack looked washed out. The glossy display also kicked back a lot of reflections, but viewing angles were fairly wide.

Using our light meter, the Aspire V5’s display registered a brightness reading of 171 lux, which is about 100 lux below the average. That showing is still brighter than the VAIO E15 (141) and Pavilion g6t-2000 (160 lux), though the Inspiron 15R notched a slightly higher 198 lux.

Performance:

Overall Score: 7/10

Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook comes with Intel i5-4200U on board. While any laptop’s performance will largely be dependent upon the tasks that are being run, the common things that we considered nevertheless are here. Considering the clock speed to be 1.60 GHz, this notebook is 1.06 GHz slower in comparison to its counterparts in Core i5 series. This is a dual core laptop, which means that the laptop has the capability of devoting good enough power to a range of applications. Also, with 3 MB cache, Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook is just the average size in contrast with other CPU caches found in the same series.

During real-world usage, the V5 fared well. We watched the 1080p trailer for “The Hobbit” while a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan and Acer Crystal Eye Webcam ran in the background, along with Google Chrome (with 10 open tabs) and Internet Explorer. The V5 was rock solid throughout, and we noticed no slowdowns at all while switching between tabs, programs or browsers. The V5 took 53 seconds to boot the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, on a par with the category average.

In the OpenOffice Spreadsheet test, in which we match 20,000 names to their corresponding addresses, the V5 completed the task in 6 minutes and 15 seconds. That’s on a par with the average (6:11) and beats the Pavilion g6t (6:43). However, the Inspiron 15R 5520 (5:11) and the VAIO E15 (4:48) finished faster.

Security:

Overall Score: 7/10

As far as security and durability of Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook is concerned, one may find it to be quite strong. You can use it for a range of purposes, such as general computing, browsing and more. But, it will remain quite an under-performer in the stressful conditions such as hard-core gaming. It is highly durable and can be carried without much of a problem.

Durability:

Overall Score: 7/10

The notebook comes with Windows 8.1 operating system. There are a range of things that go in this system, which makes it a bit slower on power-consuming applications, but generally good. You can have this with 1 year warranty. However, the company offers limited warranty, which is standard, offered by most of them.

The Acer Aspire V5 comes with a variety of programs and shortcuts to Web-based services, including Skype, Netflix, Nook for PC, Skype as well as clear.fi Photo and Media managers. A trial of AUPEO!, an Internet radio tuner, offers an extremely limited selection of music and frankly isn’t worth using in place of services like Pandora or Spotify.

Acer Backup Manager lets you to back up your data, create a backup image of a drive or transfer your files from one machine to another. The ad-supported Microsoft Office Starter is also included, as are trial versions of McAfee Internet Security Suite and Norton Online Backup. The Acer Games portal points you to casual games such as Bejeweled 3 and Torchlight.

Webcam:

Overall Score: 7/10

The in-built webcam picture clarity is fine. With the resolution of 1280 x 720 on the front, Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook offers normal webcam experience. It also has the in-built microphone.

The 1.3-MP camera and its accompanying Acer Crystal Eye Webcam software can snap still shots and video at resolutions of 320 x 240, 640 x 480 and 1280 x 1024. While images were passable, finer details such as facial stubble weren’t visible at all. In fluorescent lighting, colors looked significantly darker and bland, and in natural light, lighter colors looked extra bright.

Acer Crystal Eye Webcam lets you upload your captures directly to YouTube or Facebook and make basic image adjustments with standard settings such as brightness, contrast, hue, sharpness, gamma and more.

Audio:

Overall Score: 7/10

The V5’s speakers are bottom-mounted; as a result, sound became muffled when we placed the system in on our lap. The speakers get a boost from Dolby Advanced Audio, which offers an equalizer for customizing sound settings as well as a mini control panel with three optimized presets: Movie, Music and Game.

Movie was easily the best setting for listening to music. When we listened to Quincy Jones’ “Soul Bossa Nova” on this setting, the low and high flute notes were clearly audible and oboes were clear, distinct and balanced. When we listened to “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana on the Music setting, Kurt Cobain’s vocals sounded hollow and bass sounded weak. Anything we listened to with the Game setting sounded distorted.

Graphics:

Overall Score: 7.5/10

acer v5 graphics

This notebook comes packed with Intel HD Graphics 4400. This is an integrated graphic card, but has 4 GB RAM. This clearly indicates that the graphic card will consume the memory of system instead of using its own. Appearance wise, on complete brightness, the pictures looked good.

The Intel HD Graphics 4400 GPU makes Acer V5 good for casual games. When we ran our “World of Warcraft” tests, the Acer ran the game at 50 fps on the “Good” setting under 1366 x 768 resolution. That’s below the 65 fps category average, but still fairly impressive for integrated graphics.

On 3DMark11, the V5 scored 594, about half the mainstream category average of 1,138. The VAIO E15 and the Inspiron 15R 5520 fared a bit better, each notching a score of 643.

Ports:

Overall Score: 8/10

Acer Aspire V5-473P-5602 1

Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook has two 2.0 USB ports and one 3.0 USB port. It also offers you Acer converter port, which makes things simpler. There is a port for headphone too and the laptop offers one HDMI port as well.

Most of the ports on the V5 reside on the unit’s left side. Here, you’ll find a headphone jack, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port, and connectors for the charger as well as an Ethernet port (which requires an adapter). A 2-in-1 memory card reader sits on the left side of the lip. The right has a Kensington lock slot and a DVD+/-RW drive; We would have liked to seen at least one USB port on the right side, which would make it easier for right-handed people to use a mouse.

Battery:

Overall Score: 7.5/10

acer v5 battery

Aspire V5-473P-5602 Touch Notebook has an average or standard battery life. With 7 hours of life, the system can run most part of the day without being plugged in. However, if you are using photo or video editing software or the video games or other power-hungry apps, the battery time shall come down considerably. The battery details as offered by the company say that it is a 4-cell Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) 3560 mAh battery.

During the LAPTOP Battery Test, the Acer’s 4-cell battery delivered a dismal 4 hours and 12 minutes of battery life. That’s 1 hour and 22 minutes less than the mainstream category average of 5:34. It’s also anemic when compared with the HP Pavilion g6t, the Dell Inspiron 15R and the Envy 6z. Those notebooks ran for 4:50, 4:52 and 6:18, respectively. The VAIO E15 was also poor, but lasted a bit longer at 4:24.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Nice Display

  • Cheap Price

  • Good Performance

Cons
  • Not For Gamer

  • Heavy Weight

  • Poor Storage

Conclusion:

On using this notebook, we found that even though it is pretty good for general purposes, such as browsing, office or school tasks and at such a price, it is a good deal to have; but if you are someone who needs a more tech-advanced and high-loaded system, you can compare it with other systems as well. The graphics or gaming addicts can definitely check out more options, but for general purposes, this seems to be a pretty good and decent deal. So go buy this and have nice audio and display at your fingertips.

Author’s Personal Verdict:

The Acer Aspire V5 provides good performance for a low price. This 14-inches is also thinner and lighter than the bargain notebook competition. However, the battery life could be better and the design is bland.
